70% of the Earth is covered by water. It’s an essential resource for life, and its pollution is a global problem. When harmful substances find their way into rivers, lakes and seas, water quality is reduced. This harms aquatic life, as well as human health. Many species can’t survive in polluted water, so we can tell if pollution is present by the animals and plants living in it.The biggest source of water pollution is mankind. Agricultural Pollution Chemicals used in agriculture are one of the primary sources of water pollution. Farmers spray crops with fertiliser and pesticides to increase productivity and food yield. Rainfall produces surface runoff, transporting these chemicals into natural waterways, where they can cause eutrophication. Eutrophication Eutrophication occurs when extra nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorus from fertilisers, change the balance of an aquatic ecosystem. Phytoplankton are microscopic plant-like organisms. They use these nutrients to grow, and so rapidly increase in number. This causes an algal bloom. The algae consume carbon dioxide, and their dense surface coverage can block out sunlight, which kills or stunts other plants. When these plants die, they are broken down or decomposed by bacteria, which uses up dissolved oxygen from the water.And eventually the water may become a dead zone. Sewage Sewage can run into water, also raising nutrient levels and contributing to eutrophication. These pollutants are especially problematic in the developing world, due to poor sanitation. Pollutants from the sewage can kill aquatic organisms and pass infectious diseases to the humans who drink the water. Industrial Pollution Industrial waste often contains toxic compounds, which can make their way into nearby bodies of water. This is dangerous for marine life, and harmful to the humans who eat contaminated fish. And there are many other water pollutants, such as oil spills… acid rain… and radioactive waste.
