Land Pollution Each year we produce more and more waste than the last. If current rates continue, we’ll double the amount of waste produced every 25 years. Household Waste Most rubbish is buried in holes in the ground, called landfills. As populations increase, the mountains of rubbish keep growing, and we’re running out of land to dump it all in. Rubbish gradually decomposes, but some materials can take hundreds, or even thousands, of years to break down completely. Decomposition of waste: Paper – 2 to 5 months. Tin can – 100 years. Plastic bottle – 500 years And as waste decomposes it releases carbon dioxide and methane – greenhouse gases, which contribute to global warming. Many items also contain toxic substances, such as battery acid, which contaminate the groundwater and soil. Household Solutions We can protect the land by consuming less, by using more biodegradable materials, and by recycling. 80% of things in our dustbins, from glass and plastic, to metal and paper, can be recycled. But we’re way off this target, with most countries only recycling a tiny fraction of what’s thrown away. And this is only one cause of land pollution. First we will need the sun so here is the Sun when the sun shines the heat of the sun warms the water turning it into an invisible gas called water vapor this process the changing of water into a gas is called evaporation because gas is lighter than liquids water vapor rises into the sky and they further move up into the way from earth's surface due to the temperature of gas so in the sky the water vapor cools and changes back into tiny water droplets this chage of water vapor into wateer droplets is called condensation and it's the opposite of evaporation. clouds are made up of tiny water droplets so when condensation occurs in the sky clouds form and grow. let's see it from a closer perspective the droplets bang together and form even bigger drops when the drops get heavy they fall because of gravity they even grow and bump into one another on their journey from the cloud to the ground and every single raindrop that reaches the ground is made of 1 million of the original tiny water droplets . raindrops fall on the ground surface when the sun can shine on them and the whole pocess happens again this whole process is called a water cycle and keeps the water moving from the ground to the sky fulfilling the water needs of the plants animals and people to survive so now you know how the rain drops from and fall. let's summarize this steps of water cycle evaporation the changing of water into a gas is called evaporation condensation the changing of water vapor into water troplets is called condensation precipition water falls from the sky in the form rain snow or hail this process is called precipitation. When harmful substances find their way into rivers, lakes and seas, water quality is reduced. This harms aquatic life, as well as human health. Many species can’t survive in polluted water, so we can tell if pollution is present by the animals and plants living in it.The biggest source of water pollution is mankind. Agricultural Pollution Chemicals used in agriculture are one of the primary sources of water pollution. Farmers spray crops with fertiliser and pesticides to increase productivity and food yield. Rainfall produces surface runoff, transporting these chemicals into natural waterways, where they can cause eutrophication. Eutrophication Eutrophication occurs when extra nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorus from fertilisers, change the balance of an aquatic ecosystem. Phytoplankton are microscopic plant-like organisms. They use these nutrients to grow, and so rapidly increase in number. This causes an algal bloom. The algae consume carbon dioxide, and their dense surface coverage can block out sunlight, which kills or stunts other plants. When these plants die, they are broken down or decomposed by bacteria, which uses up dissolved oxygen from the water.And eventually the water may become a dead zone. Sewage Sewage can run into water, also raising nutrient levels and contributing to eutrophication. These pollutants are especially problematic in the developing world, due to poor sanitation. Pollutants from the sewage can kill aquatic organisms and pass infectious diseases to the humans who drink the water. Industrial Pollution Industrial waste often contains toxic compounds, which can make their way into nearby bodies of water. This is dangerous for marine life, and harmful to the humans who eat contaminated fish. And there are many other water pollutants, such as oil spills… acid rain… and radioactive waste. The sunrise heralds the dawn of a new day. As the Earth spins, one side of the planet now faces the Sun, and the activity of a new day begins. Spinning on its axis, the Earth completes a full rotation every 24 hours. Whilst we cannot feel it, this means the equator spins at just over a thousand miles per hour. But the speed at the poles is almost zero. While we face the Sun and have daytime, the opposite side of the Earth is in darkness, but the constant spinning of the Earth means this will soon be reversed. This is what makes night and day. During the day, the Sun is always there, even if we can’t see it behind the clouds. On a clear day, when the Moon is in the right position, we can see it too. As dusk approaches, and the Sun sets, it appears to drop out of the sky. But the Sun isn’t really moving – it’s an illusion, caused by the Earth’s rotation. It’s nighttime, and this side of the Earth is facing away from the Sun, and it’s now dark. Providing there are no clouds, we can see the Moon, and the various constellations of stars. The stars are like our Sun and generate their own light, but the Moon has no natural light – it’s lit by the Sun reflecting off its barren surface. Similar to the Sun during the day, the Moon appears to move across the sky – but it’s the spinning of the Earth that creates this illusion. The Earth takes 24 hours to do a full rotation, and come back to its original position in front of the Sun.
